Holiday Gift Ideas for Teachers - It’s the Thanks That Counts
December 17, 2007
(ARA) Parents often rack their brains trying to find the perfect gift for their child’s teacher, but a recent survey indicates teachers would rather receive a thank-you and extra effort on the part of parents and students than another mug or apple knick knack.
The survey of 1500 elementary school teachers was conducted by Learning Resources, a manufacturer of hands-on educational products for the classroom and home.
The majority of responding teachers said the greatest gift they could receive was a parent being involved in their child’s education. Ideas that truly give a teacher what they want for the holidays include:
* Write a note or “contract” to your child’s teacher committing to attendance at parent-teacher conferences and homework help. Seventy-four percent of teachers said a parent’s involvement in their child’s education was the best way to show their appreciation for a teacher.
* Put together a simple, handmade thank you note with your child. Twenty-two percent of survey respondents said a thank you was the only holiday gift necessary.
* Contact the teacher and coordinate a time to come in and help in the classroom for an afternoon. Your presence in school or as a field trip chaperone can be a lifesaver for an overworked teacher.
* Help your child create a written “pledge” to do good work at school and give a copy to their teacher. Forty-three percent of teachers said a commitment to quality classroom work was the best thank you they could receive from a student.
* While only one percent of surveyed teachers chose a traditional gift as the best token of appreciation, ideas with broad appeal include gift certificates to local restaurants or spas -- for some much deserved rest and relaxation or a gift card to an office supply store to purchase additional classroom items.
